DESCRIPTION OF ACCOMMODATION

The historic city of Sopron was rounded even in the era of the Romans by a vallation. This was made stronger from time to time. The vallation was tackled by a thick stone wall both at the internal and external sides in the Middle Ages. It resulted in a fortress wall which was 6 or 7 metres high and 20 metres wide. One could get into the fortress through two gates, the so-called fore-gate and back-gate. In the place of the fore-gate there stood the most characteristic building of Sopron, the "Fire Tower".
In the city there stood 94 houses according to data of 1379. The city was entirely built-in until 1784. Archaeological researches excavated the basis of a precedent building of the Árpád age (10th and 11th century) in the basement of Hotel Wollner. The building of the hotel was already mentioned in a land-register of 1715. It is a baroque, single-staged living building built directly onto the fortress wall and developed in unbroken rows with an enclosed yard. It was renewed in classical style in the middle of the 19th century. In the wall of the internal yard there is a cenotaph of the Roman age which was brought here by a former owner of the house, József Torkos Lutheran pastor from Győr in 1756.
During the centuries the building had more owners. Among them there were Lutheran pastors, doctors, lawyers, wholesale traders. 10 living flats were formed there after the World War 2. The renovation of Hotel Wollner was performed according to a plan of 1839. The basement of the building is more than 300 years old, its rooms on the ground-floor and on the 2nd floor are arched. During the renovation it was managed to renew the building in its authentic condition. The hotel has been a pearl of the city of Sopron recently, with its beautiful internal yard, terraced garden, old basement, elegant internal rooms, furniture of its original age.
